Girls, Glasses & Eye Shadow

Lens Appeal
Rimmed Frames: to make eyes pop from the shadows that frames cast, line upper and lower lash lines, then apply a shadow in the same color family as your frames [for tortoiseshell, wear gold or brown]
Rimless Frames: eyes can look washed-out behind frameless glasses. Counteract the lack of definition by lining your upper lash lines and applying volumizing mascara [waterproof is less likely to smudge lenses]

The Best Makeup to Wear with Glasses
By Bobbi Brown, A well-known makeup artist and  the founder of her own multimillion-dollar cosmetics business
QuestionNow that I'm wearing glasses, should I change my eye makeup?
QuestionLess is definitely more if you wear glasses--overdone eye makeup will clash with your frames and look garish. Specific eye makeup how-to's depend on your prescription: If you're nearsighted, your eyes may seem smaller behind glasses; lining your top and lower lids is a surefire way to make them look bigger. For fair to medium skin tones, stick with a mahogany or light charcoal liner; for darker complexions, a deep coal or black. Curl upper lashes and apply a coat of mascara for an even more eye-opening effect. Farsighted prescriptions often make eyes look bigger, so use a light hand--dust a neutral shadow on lids and brush on a coat of mascara. Because glasses also draw attention to your brows, keep them neat: Pluck strays and fill in sparse spots with a brow powder that's one shade lighter than your hair color.

HOW TO  SELECT SIZE AND SHAPE OF FRAMES
Pull your hair back from your face and look in the mirror - what shape of face do you have? - well study the chart below and find your face shape, and choose the frame shape suggested to best suited your face.

Face Shape
Description & Glass Type

Oval Face
A rounded chin and forehead; your face appears longer than wide and your forehead is wider than your jaw.

The oval face is considered to be the ideal shape because of its balanced proportions. To keep the oval's natural balance, look for eyeglass frames that are as wide as (or wider than) the broadest part of the face, or walnut-shaped frames that are not too deep or too narrow .

Consider most shapes of frames

Rectangle Face
A long face with a square chin

The oblong face is longer than it is wide and has a long straight cheek line and sometimes a longish nose. To make the face appear shorter and more balanced, try frames that have a top-to-bottom depth, decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face or a low bridge to shorten the nose

Consider large square frames

Triangle Face
A broad forehead with tapering width down to a very narrow rounded chin.
To minimize the width of the top of the face, try frames that are wider at the bottom, very light colours and materials, and rimless frame styles (which have a light, airy effect because the lenses are simply held in place to the temples by a few screws).

Consider small square or rounded frames

Square Face
A broad forehead with a long jaw-line and a square chin.

A square face has a strong jaw line and a broad forehead, plus the width and length are in the same proportions. To make the square face look longer and soften the angles, try narrow frame styles, frames that have more width than depth and narrow ovals.

Consider oval and round style frames

Diamond Face
A narrow forehead with wide cheekbones and a narrow chin. Diamond-shaped faces are narrow at the eye line and jaw line, and cheekbones are often high and dramatic. This is the rarest face shape. To highlight the eyes and bring out the cheekbones, try frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines, or try rimless frames or oval and cat-eye shapes

Consider wider, bigger styles

Round Face
A circular face, usually with fuller cheeks and a rounded chin.

A round face has curvilinear lines with the width and length in the same proportions and no angles. To make the face appear thinner and longer, try angular narrow eyeglass frames to lengthen the face, a clear bridge that widens the eyes and frames that are wider than they are deep, such as a rectangular shape.

Consider more rectangular and wider styles

Pyramid Face
A narrow forehead that widens at the cheek and chin areas. To add width and emphasize the narrow upper third of the face,

Consider frames that are heavily accented with colour and detailing on the top half or cat-eye shapes

How to Buy Sunglasses
Excerpted from Allure/June 2011 an interview with Kristen McCabe, Sunglass Hut

WORK THE ANGLES To create balance, choose sunglasses that don't mimic the shape of your face. If your face is round, look for rectangular frames; square jaw & high forehead? rounded frames are best. People with heart shaped faces can pull off almost any style.  Classic Ray-Ban aviators are a universally flattering shape.

SHIELD YOURSELF Lenses should protect your eyes from 99% UV rays, check packaging.  For glare protection, think about getting polarized lenses-they block bouncing reflection.

FIND THE RIGHT FIT After slipping on a pair of glasses in the store, smile. The glasses shouldn't move from the bridge of your nose or graze your cheeks. Most metal frame glasses have adjustable nose pads, but mose plastic glasses don't.  If you can fit 2 fingers between the arm and your face, you need a smaller frame.

MAKE THEM LAST Wearing your sunglasses up on your head will stretch out tarms.  The are easy to adjust, any eye or sunglass store will usually do it for free.

Take A Powder!

Mineral Finishing Veil
5 Reasons To Take A  Powder
Excerpts from Cindy Crawford's BASIC FACE

  1. Finishes a bare face Veil will give skin a polished appearance, even if you skip foundation.
  2. Blends and corrects makeup Veil unifies texture and helps blend out makeup edges.  It will also lighten up too heavy makeup by simply adding powder.
  3. Promotes Longevity Makeup lasts noticeably longer with powder.
  4. Sets Makeup Veil makes everything stay put!
  5. Stops Shine Veil is the ultimate absorbing powder, absorbing unwanted moisture.

FVC Mineral Finishing Veils
Choosing Color & Texture
Bare face? match your skin tone
With foundation go with a slightly lighter shade

Most Mineral Finishing Veils are Matte texture
Some newer veils add a bit of shimmer

Putting It On
  • Make sure you don't have any mistakes since powder sets whatever you put it on
  • Use the least possible amount of powder, you are not supposed to see it, only its effect
  • Apply  lightly and evenly so as to not look patchy
  • Shake off excess powder from brushes before applying
  • When using a puff, lightly press on face and roll
  • Blot moisture on face with tissue before using mineral finishing veil to avoid clumping

Psst.....
Dust a layer of powder under eyes to catch the inevitable fallout of eye shadow.  When finished with eyes simply brush powder away and it will take the eye shadow fallout with it!

Mineral Bronzer, Naturally

Bronzers imitate the healthy look of the sun on our skin and are also used to warm up the complexion. Applying bronzer is a great way to add a healthy glow all over the face for all skin tones. Blush should be used over bronzer on the apple of your cheeks to add a POP of color.

Which Color To Choose?
Fair/ Light Skintone = Beige brown
Medium/Tan Skintone=Red brown

Health.com May 2011
Bobbi Brown, contributing beauty & lifestyle editor
Q How can I wear bronzer so it looks natural?
A Choose a brown toned powder that's just a little darker than your natural skin, and steer clear of anything that's too orange or shimmery. To avaoid streaks, apply your bronzer by a window, where you have plenty of natural daylight. Hit your cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin. And, most important, be sure to put some farther down your neck and check, so it blends in with the rest of your skin.

HOW TO APPLY PERFECT BRONZER

Face Value Cosmetics Mineral Blush & Bronzers

Mineral Bronzing Powder can add warmth to your face in all seasons. To achieve a balanced sun-kissed look and not a sun-drenched look, use a color 1-2 shades lighter than your skintone. Apply bronzer to all the spots on your face that the sun naturally kisses. To add dimension apply a "pop" of color with blush on the apples of your cheeks.

Bronze Mineral Glow provides a creamy beige bronze finish! An All-Over-Face finishing powder that combines the perfection of a finishing veil with the dewy shimmer of a glow.

Copper Tan Mineral Bronzer is a reddish-brown copper tan semi-matte mineral bronzer shot with subtle sparkle that adds warmth and a sun-kissed glow to your face.

A Balanced Approach to Sun Protection

According to Prevention Magazine [June 2011] 69% of women lie to themselves saying they don't need sunscreen. Don't be one of them.  Arm yourself with the simplest and strongest weapons we have against wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer.

Reality Check  You don't have to be on the beach to soak up rays. Most people rack up 14 hours of casual UV exposure per week. Makeup and a daily lotion with SPF are great steps, but 'the protection is short-lived on hot, sunny days' says NYC dermatologist Arielle Kauvar, MD. Use a sweat-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF30 on all sun-exposed skin to be safe.

Does Mineral Makeup Provide Enough Sun Protection? excerpts from Skincare-news.com team
Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD writes that many of her patients choose mineral powders because of the SPF.  Women put on about 0.085 grams of powder, while we would need to apply 1.2 grams to receive the full SPF benefit.  A balanced approach can be achieved by using a daily sunscreen along with your mineral makeup to maintain a healthy, luminous appearance.

Protection from the Inside Out [GCI May 2011]
Some antioxidants, particularly the carotenoids, are structured to preferentially absorb the most harmful wavelengths of UV light, quenching free radicals, protecting the skin, strengthening collagen and elastin, stanching inflammation and DNA damage, and altogether putting the brakes on photo-oxidative stress.
Carotenoids are yellow, orange, and red pigments synthesized by plants. The most common carotenoids in North American diets are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene.  Go To This LInk for more info: Carotenoids

Allure/June2011 SKIN RX
excerpted from  Dermatologist Ava Shamban new book 'The Breakthrough Plan for Renewal'
Rrecommendations for her Beverly Hills celeb's:
  1. Wear a high daily SPF over a potent antioxidant serum to protect skin from free radicals.
  2. Use retinols at night, unless you are pregnant.
  3. Eat well and exercise
  4. Every five to six weeks get customized peels, which remove dead cells and discoloration caused by sun damage.  Getting the surface completely smooth is what gives skin luminosity. They also get more facials than most of us.

Taming those wild brows

From This

To This
"You have seen what a difference a great frame can make to a painting. It is the eyebrows that form a frame for your eyes. Beautifully groomed eyebrows make a huge difference.  It is possible to transform a face with just tweezers, shadow , a brow brush and a brow gel.  A professional will help you find your ideal shape.  Once the brows have been groomed, it is easy to do your own upkeep." Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual
"In addition to telegraphing feelings, eyebrows frame the face and create clear boundaries for eye makeup, which is why keeping them well groomed is so important. The cleaner and more artfully shaped they are, the more open, uplifted and symmetrical your face looks.  In fact, many makeup artists assert that if your brows are in great shape, you need almost no other makeup to look polished and pulled together.  Some enthusiastic pros even venture to say that a good brow-grooming is almost as effective as a facelift." Getting Gorgeous from InStyle

Tweezer Care When tweezers get dull, which happens with repeated use, they are no longer as effective at grabbing on to and removing small hairs. You can take them to a knife shop for sharpening. Some of the better brands, such as Tweezerman, come with a lifetime guarantee that includes free sharpening whenever necessary. Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual  [who knew?]

Allure Magazine, Insiders Guide p84 June 2011
ASK ALLURE Dermatologist Patricia Wexler
Q    I overplucked my brows, what can I do?
A  There are several ways to help regrow your brows.  Minoxidill, the ingredient in over-the counter hair-growth products such as Rogaine is one.  Dip a cotton swab in the solution and run it over your brows.  Latisse, the prescription treatment that lengthens and thickens lashes also works on brows.  Paint it on carefully; with daily use, you should see results in 12-16 weeks.

Prevention Magazine April 2011
The key to making brow powder, pencil and gel look natural is to use the right hue.  "My rule of thumb is to choose a color that's a shade or two lighter than your hair" says Kristie Streicher.  It ends up looking more natural because the colors usually go on darker than you expect.  In general, medium brown suites brunettes, warm brown is best for redheads and taupe is best on blondes and those with gray hair.

Face Value Cosmetics offers several deeper matte shades suitable for filling in brows.  I would recommend you look at  our matte Bark, Shroom, Woods, Cocoa, Espresso and Onyx shades:

On a personal note, I have a poll on my FACEBOOK PAGE asking for your opinion on your interest in a clear brow gel and mineral mascara.  Please participate.  Your input will help me decide if I should add these products to our makeup line. Thanks~Nancy
