A Balanced Approach to Sun Protection

According to Prevention Magazine [June 2011] 69% of women lie to themselves saying they don't need sunscreen. Don't be one of them.  Arm yourself with the simplest and strongest weapons we have against wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer.

Reality Check  You don't have to be on the beach to soak up rays. Most people rack up 14 hours of casual UV exposure per week. Makeup and a daily lotion with SPF are great steps, but 'the protection is short-lived on hot, sunny days' says NYC dermatologist Arielle Kauvar, MD. Use a sweat-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF30 on all sun-exposed skin to be safe.

Does Mineral Makeup Provide Enough Sun Protection? excerpts from Skincare-news.com team
Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD writes that many of her patients choose mineral powders because of the SPF.  Women put on about 0.085 grams of powder, while we would need to apply 1.2 grams to receive the full SPF benefit.  A balanced approach can be achieved by using a daily sunscreen along with your mineral makeup to maintain a healthy, luminous appearance.

Protection from the Inside Out [GCI May 2011]
Some antioxidants, particularly the carotenoids, are structured to preferentially absorb the most harmful wavelengths of UV light, quenching free radicals, protecting the skin, strengthening collagen and elastin, stanching inflammation and DNA damage, and altogether putting the brakes on photo-oxidative stress.
Carotenoids are yellow, orange, and red pigments synthesized by plants. The most common carotenoids in North American diets are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene.  Go To This LInk for more info: Carotenoids

Rrecommendations for her Beverly Hills celeb's:
  1. Wear a high daily SPF over a potent antioxidant serum to protect skin from free radicals.
  2. Use retinols at night, unless you are pregnant.
  3. Eat well and exercise
  4. Every five to six weeks get customized peels, which remove dead cells and discoloration caused by sun damage.  Getting the surface completely smooth is what gives skin luminosity. They also get more facials than most of us.

Taming those wild brows

From This

To This
"You have seen what a difference a great frame can make to a painting. It is the eyebrows that form a frame for your eyes. Beautifully groomed eyebrows make a huge difference.  It is possible to transform a face with just tweezers, shadow , a brow brush and a brow gel.  A professional will help you find your ideal shape.  Once the brows have been groomed, it is easy to do your own upkeep." Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual
"In addition to telegraphing feelings, eyebrows frame the face and create clear boundaries for eye makeup, which is why keeping them well groomed is so important. The cleaner and more artfully shaped they are, the more open, uplifted and symmetrical your face looks.  In fact, many makeup artists assert that if your brows are in great shape, you need almost no other makeup to look polished and pulled together.  Some enthusiastic pros even venture to say that a good brow-grooming is almost as effective as a facelift." Getting Gorgeous from InStyle

Tweezer Care When tweezers get dull, which happens with repeated use, they are no longer as effective at grabbing on to and removing small hairs. You can take them to a knife shop for sharpening. Some of the better brands, such as Tweezerman, come with a lifetime guarantee that includes free sharpening whenever necessary. Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual  [who knew?]

ASK ALLURE Dermatologist Patricia Wexler
Q    I overplucked my brows, what can I do?
A  There are several ways to help regrow your brows.  Minoxidill, the ingredient in over-the counter hair-growth products such as Rogaine is one.  Dip a cotton swab in the solution and run it over your brows.  Latisse, the prescription treatment that lengthens and thickens lashes also works on brows.  Paint it on carefully; with daily use, you should see results in 12-16 weeks.

Prevention Magazine April 2011
The key to making brow powder, pencil and gel look natural is to use the right hue.  "My rule of thumb is to choose a color that's a shade or two lighter than your hair" says Kristie Streicher.  It ends up looking more natural because the colors usually go on darker than you expect.  In general, medium brown suites brunettes, warm brown is best for redheads and taupe is best on blondes and those with gray hair.

Face Value Cosmetics offers several deeper matte shades suitable for filling in brows.  I would recommend you look at  our matte Bark, Shroom, Woods, Cocoa, Espresso and Onyx shades:

On a personal note, I have a poll on my FACEBOOK PAGE asking for your opinion on your interest in a clear brow gel and mineral mascara.  Please participate.  Your input will help me decide if I should add these products to our makeup line. Thanks~Nancy

Metallic Mineral Eye Shadow

Alicia Keys SUPERWOMAN Video

This week I applied my metallic 24k Gold Mineral Eye Shadow to Christine.  She already had black eyeliner and mascara on.  Using a tapered eye shadow brush, I dipped the brush into the 24k Gold Mineral Eye Shadow powder, tapped off the excess powder and pressed the color onto her eyelids blending up above the crease and blending out the edges.  I used just a tiny amount of the 24k Gold Mineral Eye Shadow powder on the tip of the brush, tapping off the excess and applied carefully under the bottom lash line.  To complete the look, I used our new Brow Highlighter, a see-thru shimmery white. just under the eye brow and blended into the 24k Gold Mineral Eye Shadow :

Application notes:  We applied the eyeshadow sparingly to give a subtle look for an 18 year old.  The camera did not pickup the actual sparkle of both the 24k Gold and Brow Highlighter mineral makeup eye shadow.

TIP How To Apply Glittery Shadow, May 2011 issue of Allure Magazine
"If glitter from your eye shadow falls onto your cheek, roll a piece of Scotch tape onto your fingertip and use it lightly to lift off any flecks", says makeup artist Troy Surratt.

4 Reasons To Wear Mineral Makeup

For your listening & viewing pleasure:

The Benefits of Mineral Makeup are numerous, especially for those who prefer a natural approach to beauty.

4 Reasons to Wear Mineral Makeup
ref: Prevention Magazine 2010 Published Report
  1. Lighter, More Natural Coverage: Minerals have reflective properties, so light bounces off the face and creates a youthful glow.  Minerals also bind to the skin which make them less prone to becoming cake-y and drying our your complexion which can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles and imperfections.  Yes, because of their camouflaging properties, they will hide everything from acne scars and under eye circles to rosacea. Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons count on it for their patients to cover bruising and inflammation that can develop after some cosmetic procedures.
  2. Richer, Longer-Lasting Color: Mineral makeup contains natural pigments in place of artificial dyes resulting in colors that are deeper and more vibrant.  Colors in a range of hues including reds, browns, tans, blues, greens, violets, pinks, as beautiful as Mother Nature herself.  Even better, these pigments won't fade of dilute the tone of makeup requiring less touch-ups.
  3. Reduces UVA Related Wrinkling: The base ingredients of mineral makeup are serecite mica, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the same FDA approved ingredients that block damaging UVA and UVB rays in sunscreen.  It provides a physical barrier to help protect your skin from damaging rays. It is still advised to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen or lotion with an SPF of at least 30 to your entire face before applying makeup.
  4. Excellent for Sensitive Skin: Many mineral makeup lines, including Face Value Cosmetics, are free of artificial dyes, fragrances, alcohol, preservatives and oils, which can irritate skin.  This means they can be safe to use even on sensitive skin.  It is still recommended to do a patch test before use if you are highly sensitive or allergic.
Mica minerals have perfect basal cleavage, which means that they are easily split into thin, often transparent sheets. Muscovite is so common it is considered a rock-forming mineral.  ref: about.com:geology
